Health Education AIDS Liaison, Toronto
HEAL Toronto Mission Statement
H.E.A.L. (Health, Education, AIDS Liaison) Toronto is a nonprofit cooperative of volunteers who
work with an international network of scientists, journalists, activists and patients who question
common beliefs about HIV & AIDS. It was founded in 1997 by Robert Johnston, Carl Strygg and Ian Young.
Many of our members and supporters have been labeled HIV Positive.
Our Goals:
- To help empower people whose lives are touched by HIV and AIDS by encouraging them to become better
informed about alternative views of the causes of AIDS and the treatment of HIV and AIDS.
- To challenge the medical and scientific establishment to explain the many paradoxes within
HIV/AIDS theory.
Why we are here:
- We contend that access to dissenting views is necessary for people to make truly informed
decisions about HIV, AIDS and health.
- We assert that by focusing AIDS research exclusively on HIV we lose the vital diversity in approaches that characterizes science at it's healthiest - slowing progress toward real prevention and a cure.
What we do:
- We provide easy access to the large body of data which questions mainstream thinking on HIV/AIDS
and offer support for anyone educating themselves about it.
- We present speakers whose views and experiences challenge common assumptions about HIV/AIDS.
- We ask questions in public forums.
- We offer alternative treatment information for maintaining and restoring health.
Our approach:
- We endeavor to provide our services in an environment of love, hope and mutual respect.
- We strive to distinguish clearly between scientific evidence and personal or collective
supposition.
- We question the “pill for every ill’ model of health care and the safety and effectiveness of HIV
treatments.
- We respect the power of each individual to be in complete control of their health.
- We favour consideration of the whole person’s experience of health and quality of life over
clinical or surrogate markers for health.
- We encourage individuals to be responsible for their own health and to make their own
independent, informed decisions.
- We strongly question the practice of predicting death for any patient.
- We recognize every persons right to make decisions about health, treatment and lifestyle free of
fear, guilt, coercion or the threat of moral judgment or reprisal.
- HEAL Toronto has no connections to the pharmaceutical industry.
- It is part of our mandate that no one with decision making power will ever earn money from their
work with HEAL.
- We continually strive to incorporate new, verifiable information into our work and we encourage a
dynamic working environment where change is welcome. All of us at HEAL Toronto celebrate a
diversity of approach and opinion while working together toward our individual and collective
goals.
