Who is HEAL?

HEAL is a non-profit, community based education network of independent chapters located throughout the U.S., Canada and around the world. Originally founded in 1982 as an AIDS support group, in 1985, under the direction of president Dr. Michael Ellner and science advisor Dr. Frank Buianouckas, HEAL New York became the inspiration for an international movement challenging the validity of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis and the efficacy of HIV-based treatment protocols. For more than a decade, HEAL New York has been the leading source for comprehensive information on effective, non-toxic and holistic approaches to recovery from AIDS defining illnesses and has served as a consistent voice calling for honesty in AIDS issues.

There are presently HEAL chapters across the United States as well as groups in Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Canada, England Germany and Mexico. HEAL is the only AIDS organization that does not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry, the US government or any entity with a vested interest in the perpetuation of AIDS.

Each chapter begins with a search for truth that many times becomes a story of triumph. HEAL Monterey was started by Michele Marie who was told she had three years to live after testing HIV positive in 1988. "Ignorance is the real epidemic," says Michelle. HEAL Seattle, founded by Ron Plazza who tested positive in 1992, operates as a project of the local Gay Community Social Services. Paul Philpott started HEAL Detroit after being expelled from two universities for sponsoring student forums that questioned the HIV/AIDS hypothesis. The illness of a close friend inspired Bill Wells' study of AIDS and the opening of HEAL Portland. "The evidence that AIDS research has focused in the wrong direction is overwhelming - I wanted to make a small step in correcting that direction."

Christine Maggiore endured the life altering experience of testing HIV antibody positive, negative and indeterminate several times over the course of 36 months. Once a volunteer public speaker, educator and board member serving three prominent AIDS agencies, Maggiore was frustrated by the lack of explanations these organizations offered for her personal experience. Her own search for answers about HIV and AIDS led to the establish a Los Angeles chapter of HEAL in 1995. From there she went on to found Alive & Well AIDS Alternatives.

Kasule S Peter, a professional teacher since 1989, left the teaching profession in 1990 to join the crusade against HIV/AIDS that was ravaging Uganda at the time. The next 7 years saw him in and out of AIDS Service organizations serving at different levels as HIV/AIDS counselor, administrator, trainer, social worker and project officer. During those years Peter was unware that there existed alternative and dissenting views. However, thanks to his inquisitive nature, Peter went to the internet to search for explanations of conflicting, confusing and sometimes unexplainable issues like, different HIV test results for the same individual, discordant couples, widows suspected of having HIV remarrying and giving birth to health children and living happily thereafter... then he discovered HEAL New York! This was a turning point in his life and attitude towards HIV/AIDS. "God bless Michael Ellner and Christine Maggiore for their invaluable support in providing the information packages. It is the 'New Testament' for those who are living in the shadow of the HIV/AIDS death paradigm." Peter founded HEAL-Kampala Network to challenge the orthodox and provide alternative information and counseling for living in wellness.

THE HEAL PHILOSOPHY

HEAL believes that debate and open inquiry are fundamental parts of the scientific process and should not be abandoned to accommodate the theory of HIV. The tenets of free discussion that HEAL embraces are essential ingredients of progress and discovery. HEAL's mission is to inspire creative dialogue on HIV and AIDS through education and awareness of important information unavailable from other AIDS organizations and unacknowledged by most media. HEAL believes a solution to AIDS can only come about through honest, open discussion and unbiased evaluation of the facts.
